The Limitation of Solo Agents

A single OpenClaw agent is powerful, but when given an overly complex taskβ€”like "research competitors, scrape their pricing, analyze the data in Python, and write a 10-page market report"β€”even the most advanced frontier models will eventually hit token limits, drift from the original context, or make logical leaps.

Multi-agent orchestration solves this by dividing labor. Just as a human company has Researchers, Engineers, and QA Editors, an OpenClaw network can spawn specialized personas that pass context down a pipeline.

1. Core Concepts

To build a multi-agent system with OpenClaw, you need to understand three components:

  1. The Orchestrator (Router): The "manager" agent. It parses the initial human request, breaks it down into sub-tasks (a DAG - Directed Acyclic Graph), and delegates them to worker agents.
  2. The Specialist (Worker): Agents loaded with a highly specific system prompt and limited tools. E.g., a "Coder Agent" might only have access to terminal tools, while a "Research Agent" only has web-search capabilities.

Debate / Consensus

Instead of a linear chain, you can spawn two agents with opposing system prompts (e.g., "Argue for standardizing on React" vs "Argue for standardizing on Vue") and a third agent acting as the Judge to synthesize their arguments into an objective pros/cons document.

Swarm Intelligence

Allowing agents to spontaneously spawn sub-agents when they realize a task is too large. OpenClaw supports this via the delegate_task tool, provided the system has enough API quota or local compute to handle the recursive fan-out.

Debugging Multi-Agent Systems

Debugging involves tracing the "state" between hand-offs. Always ensure your agents log their internal reasoning chains (Chain of Thought). In OpenClaw, you can enable verbose logging which outputs the conversation graph to the CLI or a visual dashboard.
